Many hockey players of today struggle with feeling like
their shots are not strong or powerful enough. Fortunately, there are many ways
to fix this problem and to get more power behind each and every shot.
Remember, it All
Starts with Technique
First things first, dial it back to basics. Many players who
struggle with shot power are actually struggling with improper technique, which
is affecting their shot.
Players should check in with their coaches to make sure
they’re doing those little but all important things right- things like holding
the stick correctly, balancing right, and standing in the proper position.
Correcting little errors like these can sometimes make a
huge difference in the power (or lack thereof) behind a player’s shot.
Work on Developing
Strong Legs
Once technique has been perfected, it’s time to look at
other flaws that could be causing shots to be less powerful.
Many people, for example, don’t get the shot power they want
because they don’t have the strength required to make it happen. And, it’s not
all about wrist strength either. Not having strong, stable legs can keep a
person from getting a powerful stance and, thus, a powerful shot.
A great exercise for developing stronger legs is the
jump-squat, which builds both leg strength and explosiveness, two keys to more
powerful shots.
Hand Placement Makes
a Difference
Many people are unaware of the fact that where they place
their hands can make a difference in the strength of their shot.
With that said, though, placing the bottom hand just below
the midpoint of the shaft can really help add more energy and power to every
shot. Players should at least try this option and see if it helps them.
Obviously, there are many tricks to get a more powerful hockey shot. However, different things work for different people, so it’s a good idea
to try several different options to find what works best for each individual
player.
